Haysville Schools

The Haysville School System is the 18th largest Kansas School district and combines the personalized spirit of a small town with a top-notch staff, curriculum and facilities normally associated with larger communities. With care and individual attention, we focus on putting each student on the road to a lifetime of learning. Encompassing 36 square miles of south-central Sedgwick County, the Haysville School District (USD 261) draws students from a wide range of urban and rural backgrounds to create a rich, well-blended student body. Our curriculum, designed to meet each student's educational needs, emphasizes the core academic areas of reading, math, science, and social studies, while incorporating all State of Kansas standards for education and reflecting national curriculum reform efforts. Our schools offer a safe learning environment with excellent teachers and staff focused on the success of their students. To meet the unique needs of each learner, the academic progress of students is monitored for early intervention.

The City of Haysville school system includes: 6 Elementary Schools (Grades Pre-K thru 5), 2 Middle Schools (Grades 6 thru 8), 1 High School (Grades 9 thru 12), and 3 Specialty Facilities.

Campus High School

The educational programs in Haysville are concerned with all phases of individual growth. Students will be provided with sound academic opportunities to facilitate their physical, emotional, social, and vocational potential. Haysville Public Schools exist for the benefit of each student regardless of his or her capacity for learning. It is our task to provide demanding programs appropriate for all levels of ability. The goal of the Special Education Department is to implement this philosophy into practice for students with disabilities and to insure that children with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.

Haysville – History

W.W. Hays came to this area in the early 1870s. Prior to his arrival here he had served as a postmaster in Colorado and as Sheriff of Sedgwick County. In 1891 he platted the land that he owned so a town could be built.

Some of the first businesses in this new town were a meat market, a couple of stores, lumberyard and a blacksmith. The post office was established in 1877, the Haysville State Bank in 1919.

Truck farming supported a lot of the families in the area. In 1874 a grist mill was built on the bank of the Cowskin to process corn that was harvested in the area.

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway bought land west of Haysville's Main Street in 1892. In 1903 a depot was opened and passenger trains shuttled people to and from Wichita. Notice the spelling of Haysville on the depot. Haysville was often spelled Hayesville thought to be named after 19th president Rutherford B. Hayes.

At first there were no church buildings so meetings were held at homes, schools and the grist mill. The first churches in Haysville were the Methodist and the Prairie Home Christian Church. Mr. Hays donated the land where both of these churches were built.

All of Haysville's historic district was destroyed in the 1999 tornado. Destruction of the historic buildings began at the red brick schoolhouse at 79th and Seneca and continued north along Main taking out the elevator, bank, churches and more. The only thing left standing on the east side of main was the original bank vault.
